The Softer Side of Signs
By Cary Sherburne
The pace is picking up in market demand for soft signage—defined by I.T. Strategies as "textiles that are directly printed via dye sublimation transfer (by inkjet and electrostatic)." While wide-format devices have been able to print on fabrics since the mid-1990s, new developments in inks and related technologies have broadened the scope of textile applications that can be created using wide-format printing technologies.
Why Textiles?
Soft signage rapidly is gaining ground over signage produced on other substrates— including paper and vinyl—due to a number of advantages that buyers deem important, including its portability and the ease of shipping due to its light weight and its ability to be folded without damaging the product. Soft signage products can also be treated with flame -retardants, are better for draping 3-D structures, and they can take advantage of an increasing array of textile types.
Soft signage applications fall into the following three primary categories:
• Point-of-purchase signage;
• Trade-show signage;
• Banners, flags, and backdrops.
And depending on the type of textile, production equipment, and inks being used, soft signage can be produced for both indoor and outdoor applications.
"This is still a technology-driven market. What really has to happen for us to maximize the effect of these technologies is for the people driving the design and creating the components that are using soft signage to expand their horizons with this technology. What we see in the long run is that the printers that are successful will maximize the use of multiple technologies so they can add a wider range capabilities for their clients. And we think they will need to both educate their clients and learn from their clients to take it to the next level."
